"Competition Law in Practice"
A well attended panel discussion on June 17th, 2009 was organized on “Competition Law in Practice”. The aim of the panel was to give clear guidance to middle management on the application of the Egyptian competition law and the role of the Authority therein. In preparing this panel discussion, AmCham Industry Committee worked with the Legal Committee as well as the Trade-Related Assistance Centre (TRAC) in cooperation with the Egyptian Competition Authority.

"Identity Theft, Consumer and Brand Fraud: You are Targeted!"
As a result of the new electronic marketplace, we are exposed to novel and unseen threats and crimes that are affecting consumers and businesses alike; namely identity theft, consumer fraud and brand falsification. In an attempt to increase awareness of these crimes, the AmCham Egypt Trade-Related Assistance Center (TRAC) in cooperation with the Consumer Protection Agency organized a conference titled 'Identity Theft, Consumer and Brand Fraud: You are Targeted!' Held on Monday, June 15, 2009, the conference featured a panel of prominent national and US experts who shared their experiences and offered best practices to overcome these breaches and to prevent their proliferation in the Egyptian market.

“The Graduation Ceremony celebrating the completion of the International Trade Marketing Certification Program ”
The graduation ceremony aimed to acquaint the business community with the International Trade Marketing certificate. The certification program which is organized by AmCham/TRAC, introduces young graduates to the international trading system and qualifying them for a career in trade. The event aimed to provide an opportunity for matchmaking; through which the new graduates will explain the unique skill set that they acquired through their enrollment in the program.

For Egypt, unemployment remains a key stumbling block to development and growth. This conference, orchestrated in co-operation with the Ministry of Manpower and Migration, explored the potentialities and challenges for the Egyptian labor force and presented a Plan of Action to enhance and maximize the competitiveness of the Egyptian labor market.

“Food Safety: Barrier or Enhancer to Trade?”
Once an elusive dream, a food safety agency in Egypt is soon to become a reality. Expecting the current parliamentary session to discuss the law establishing the national Food Safety Agency (FSA), the Trade Related Assistance Center held on December 23rd, 2008, a panel discussion titled: “Food Safety: Barrier or Enhancer to Trade”. The panel discussed the safety of domestically consumed food as well as of traded food and investigated thoroughly the draft law for a food safety agency by a variety of high level and specialized speakers. This agency will be a unifying supervisory authority concerned with implementing standards to ensure the health and safety of food in the domestic market as well as that of Egyptian food exports.

“The Egypt-U.S. Trade Finance Conference”
On 12 November 2008, the AmCham Egypt's Trade-Related Assistance Center (TRAC) in coordination with the Export-Import Bank of the U.S. and the U.S. Department of Commerce hosted a "The Egypt-U.S. Trade Finance Conference" at Semiramis Intercontinental Hotel, Cairo. The conference provided Egyptian and U.S. companies, investors, local government officials and commercial banks with information necessary to accessing U.S. government export finance and investment programs. Panel discussions focused on U.S. government trade finance and regional export credit agencies, such as the Export-Import Bank of the U.S. (Ex-Im Bank), the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). The keynote address was made by His Excellency Minister of Finance Dr. Youssef Boutros-Ghali. |

“Opportunities through the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP)”
On 3 November 2008, the AmCham Trade-Related Assistance Center (TRAC) held a panel discussion titled "Opportunities through the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP)". The Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) is an initiative through which Egyptian exports to the United States are exempt from custom duties. Egypt has, however, failed to maximize benefits out of the GSP scheme. The volume of Egypt’s exports to the U.S. under GSP amounted to USD 61 million in 2007, a mere 2.6% of Egypt’s total exports to the U.S. The expert panel addressed challenges and opportunities involved in maximizing Egypt’s exports through GSP, especially for small and medium enterprises, and explained the procedural steps for application. |

“Trade Certification Program Graduation Ceremony”
On June 15, 2008 the American Chamber of Commerce’s Trade-Related Assistance Center (TRAC) sponsored a graduation ceremony for the participants of its Trade Certification Program. The ceremony was presided over by AmCham President Omar Mohanna, USAID Deputy Mission Director John Groarke and TRAC director Dr. Magda Shahin. |

“Working with the Egyptian and U.S. Standardization Systems”
On June 3, AmCham/TRAC sponsored a panel discussion on standards and witnessed the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). To show the high level of US support, the US Ambassador Margaret Scoby attended the ceremony, which was covered extensively by the media. After the signing ceremony, experts from EOS, ANSI, the National Institute of Standardization and Technology (NIST) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) discussed the role of their respective organizations, to help better acquaint the private sector with the two standardizations systems and seek ways to make the systems more effective in promoting mutual trade interests. |

“Competition and Privatization in Egypt”
On January 28, 2008, the Trade Related Assistance Center (TRAC), in cooperation with the Egyptian Competition Authority and the Commercial Law Development Program, hosted the Second Annual Conference on Competition entitled, “Competition and Privatization in Egypt.” This Conference came as a response to the private sector wanting to understand the Competition Law and its impact on commerce. Generally speaking, the Conference discussed the relationship between privatization and competition in Egypt. Specifically, speakers focused their discussion on: privatization and economic reform, unilateral conduct during the process of privatization and the abuse of dominant position, whether privatization can promote competition in natural monopolies and regulated sectors, and a review of case studies from Egypt and Turkey in selected sectors |
