Topic: “Opportunities through the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP)”

On 3 November 2008, the AmCham Trade-Related Assistance Center (TRAC) held a panel discussion titled "Opportunities through the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP)". The Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) is an initiative through which Egyptian exports to the United States are exempt from custom duties. Egypt has, however, failed to maximize benefits out of the GSP scheme. The volume of Egypt’s exports to the U.S. under GSP amounted to USD 61 million in 2007, a mere 2.6% of Egypt’s total exports to the U.S. The expert panel addressed challenges and opportunities involved in maximizing Egypt’s exports through GSP, especially for small and medium enterprises, and explained the procedural steps for application.
