Topic: “Food Safety: Barrier or Enhancer to Trade?”

Once an elusive dream, a food safety agency in Egypt is soon to become a reality. Expecting the current parliamentary session to discuss the law establishing the national Food Safety Agency (FSA), the Trade Related Assistance Center held on December 23rd, 2008, a panel discussion titled: “Food Safety: Barrier or Enhancer to Trade”. The panel discussed the safety of domestically consumed food as well as of traded food and investigated thoroughly the draft law for a food safety agency by a variety of high level and specialized speakers. This agency will be a unifying supervisory authority concerned with implementing standards to ensure the health and safety of food in the domestic market as well as that of Egyptian food exports.
