Topic: “Competition and Privatization in Egypt.”


On January 28, 2008, the Trade Related Assistance Center (TRAC), in cooperation with the Egyptian Competition Authority and the Commercial Law Development Program, hosted the Second Annual Conference on Competition entitled, “Competition and Privatization in Egypt.” This Conference came as a response to the private sector wanting to understand the Competition Law and its impact on commerce. Generally speaking, the Conference discussed the relationship between privatization and competition in Egypt. Specifically, speakers focused their discussion on: privatization and economic reform, unilateral conduct during the process of privatization and the abuse of dominant position, whether privatization can promote competition in natural monopolies and regulated sectors, and a review of case studies from Egypt and Turkey in selected sectors
